Today International Fund “Apsny” presented a new computer to the Regional Library.

“This is a small contribution to development of educational institutions of Abkhazia, especially when it comes to Regional Libraries”, said the Vice-President of the International Fund “Apsny” Maxim Gvindjia.

Regional libraries are experiencing the same difficulties as majority of libraries. Despite the development of the Internet, regional and small libraries are still remains the source of information.

The team of four people, under the guidance of Zinaida Sabekiya is doing everything possible to preserve rare books and sources, which have been saved in such institutions.

Before Georgian-Abkhaz war in 1992-1993, 39 Regional library branches were operating in Sukhum Region. The whole system of Abkhaz libraries could accommodate 400 000 copies. After the war the staff of the library collected 13 thousand books in one library in the whole Sukhum Region. In total it is 30 thousand copies, and the number of visitor is more than 2400 people a year. There is a subscription to all newspapers and publications of Abkhazia, as well as to some Russian magazines and newspapers. The library hosts exhibitions and different events, and work with children. Despite the fact,  that the library is a source of books for students from Sukhum Region, the library itself experiencing the lack of books.

Of course, modernization of the library, expansion of rooms, new shelving and modern programs could help to attract more visitors and moreover to teach to love books. Despite the constant shortage of funds, the Regional Sukhum library is a welcoming area to all people wishing to plunge into festinating reading. The staff of the library is certified and participates in trainings and seminars, but anyway in the future the Fund plans to continue rendering assistance to libraries of Abkhazia with the aim of establishing contacts with foreign libraries for exchanging experience and interfering new technologies.
